2011 Winter Overnighter

2011 - Winter Overnighter Campsite Panorama

Troop 179 sponsored its 6th-annual winter overnighter this past weekend. This year it was at Forest Hill Park near the tennis courts (shelter 2B). Pack 11 and Pack 4 were in attendance and we had over a dozen scouts along with their Akelas, too!

Sledding

Walking back after a fun toboggan ride down the Rockefeller hill

Most Scouts arrived after lunch and immediately got their tents set up in the woods to the east of the shelters.

After getting settled, there was a strong desire to head over to the northern end of the park to the sledding hill. This is the hill that Rockefeller built his home on and now serves to launch sledders down an awesome ride.

It was cold (upper twenties) but the constant wind (strong with gusts up in the thirties) didn’t seem to cut short their enjoyment much.

Back to the shelters for hot lemonade and snacks.

There, they also had a flag raising ceremony, began meal preparation, flew airplanes and threw snowballs.

Compass work

Compass work

A four-point, reverse compass course had been set up and many Scouts tried their hands at determining the bearings for the various landmarks on the course. They did very well.

After dinner there was a reading from the book 1776 on Washington’s crossing of the Delaware river in the cold, blowing snow and rain.

That motivated us to take a walk around the baseball diamonds, looking for the coyotes seen the previous night.

Once we got back to the campsite, it was lights out and we passed a quiet night.

We had a great time and went home early the next day.

Fall 2010 Camping Preparation

Jeffrey G. | Beaumont | Friday, October 15th, 2010

Mr. Moosbrugger goes over Fall camping equipment. We got ready for camping at this week’s Pack Meeting.

Mr. Moosbrugger (Webelos Den Leader) went over location (one of the Troop Lodge cabins at Beaumont), the schedule (lots of fun things planned!),  and the equipment you might need.

Fall camping can be quite easy and you don’t always need a lot of fancy equipment. An indoor (living room floor) or summer-weight sleeping bag can be enhanced with a couple of blankets or an inexpensive fleece liner. A sleeping pad can be enhanced with a layer or two of cardboard (the main goal is to get some air between you and the ground).

And just about everyone has an array of jackets and sweaters and warm weather clothing. Just bring more! (And bring extra pairs of everything, including shoes or boots, and leave then in the car.)

Just about any tent can work for Fall. And if you get too cold, grab your sleeping bag and head into the cabin!

A full packing list and schedule will be emailed shortly and available on the website.

It looks like we’ll have an awesome time, so make sure to get it onto your calendar! October 22-24 at Beaumont Scout Reservation.

Geneva State Park Campout – July 17 to 19, 2009

Steve B. | Pack News | Tuesday, June 2nd, 2009

Summer is here and we’re getting ready for our summer camping experience.  This year we’ll be at Geneva State Park, on Lake Erie in Ashtabula County.   The pack will be doing a one hour community service project for the State Park on Saturday morning, but after that it’s fun in the sun and on the beach!  The pack has primative camping spots reserved, but there is also a very nice state park lodge  down the road from the camping area.  Families are welcome to stay at the lodge and just come down the road to hang out with the pack.

The cost of the campout will be $10/person or a maximum of $25 (to cover food expenses).  We need to keep the turnout to around 35-45 people so please RSVP early.  When you RSVP, please let us know if you will be camping or staying at the lodge.

Camp Beaumont Campout October 24-26, 2008

Steve B. | Pack News | Monday, October 20th, 2008

The Fall campout is almost upon us.  Make sure you keep an eye on the weather and adjust your packing list accordingly.  We will have Cabin 8 available for people who do not want to camp outside.  If you are going to stay in the cabin and do not have sleeping bags, at a minimum bring some sheets for bunk beds and heavy blankets to stay warm.  There will be heat in the cabins, but better safe than sorry.
